As you become acquainted with your tutor, we want to provide you with some helpful tips that will enable you to make the most of your tutoring sessions.
Expect high academic rigor from your tutors.
Turning The Tide Tutors are highly experienced educators that are specifically trained in the art of the 80/20 rule in creating a rigorous learning environment. The 80/20 rule states that tutors are to design highly effective lessons that support and align with the students’ academic goals (20%) while the students are expected to be the producers, researchers, creators, and thought leaders during the lessons (80%) so that they become empowered to take ownership of their continuing education.
What does this look like? imagine that a student is writing an AP analysis paper on Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. In order to write the essay, the tutor will review the requirements of the assignment (if provided ahead of time) and outline a structure for the lessons that asks thought-provoking questions to stimulate dialogue before the student writes (see below):
- Reflect on the ways Bradbury addresses censorship. What insights might his perspective provide for today’s debates on information control and free speech?
- In the book, how do the firemen’s attitudes differ from the citizens on the topic of books and information? In today’s society, do you consider libraries to be tools for destruction or symbols or renewal and knowledge?
- What aspects of Bradbury’s dystopian world can be seen today? Do you see yourself as living in a world like Bradbury described?

Request extra practice as needed.
Students who request extra practice typically advance more quickly towards their goals and feel a sense of accomplishment. Proud of their growth, they learn to prioritize their education from week to week, knowing that they have credible data and additional key performance metrics (KPM’s) to support both their long- and short-term objectives.
Schedule your tutoring sessions in advance.
During the school year, having a balanced and stable routine for tutoring is integral for helping students prepare for the week ahead. It also gives them confidence in knowing that they will a) be prepared for any tests and quizzes beforehand or b) they will have another opportunity to re-learn the material after an assessment to stay on track with the pace of their class.
Inform the tutor when you have a specific assignment.
Teachers provide instructions for major projects and assignments in advance. In these situations, the student should make every effort to send the shareable material to the tutor in advance so as to avoid unrealistic expectations regarding the project’s expected completion. For example, if a student is assigned a project that would likely take several hours to complete, they should provide the materials and schedule their tutor sessions accordingly to ensure it’s finished before the deadline. In the event that a tutoring session surpasses the allotted time, time credits will be deducted accordingly from the client’s account.
